**The College of Cross Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies will hold
demo-lessons for the Term 3 and 4.**
Kumamoto University undergraduate students including the Short-Term
Exchange students can experience the classes of “Multidisciplinary Studies”
of the general education as the following.

Target students: Kumamoto University students enrolled in undergraduate level
**Graduate school students may audit the classes and are welcome to participate
the demo-lessons.

Kumamoto University 2017 Spring Program
The Spring Program offered by the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies at Kumamoto University was created to provide international students who have an interest in studying abroad in Japan with a chance to experience life as an international student at Kumamoto University.
The Spring Program offers two courses to participants: an English Course (conducted in English) and a Japanese Course (conducted in Japanese).
Dates
English Course: Tuesday, February 14 – Thursday, February 23 2017 (10 days)
Japanese Course: Tuesday, February 28 – Thursday, March 9 2017 (10 days)
Place
Kumamoto University, with educational excursions around Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan
Theme
Each course of the Spring Program has its own study theme. For the English Course, the theme is “Kumamoto Groundwater and Environmental Sustainability.” For the Japanese Course, the theme is “Japanese Language and Culture.”
Eligibility
Participation in this program is open to students who:
・are undergraduate students studying at universities with which Kumamoto University has agreement for academic or student exchange
・have English language proficiency equal to or greater than IELTS level 5
・have Japanese language proficiency equal to or greater than JLPT N4
*Please note that participation in this program is limited to 40 students. If we receive more than 40 applications for the program, a selection will be held based on Grade Point Average (GPA).

Program Fee
English Course: 80,000 Japanese Yen
Japanese Course: 80,000 Japanese Yen
○ includes accommodation, class fees, field trip fees, and breakfast.
× Does not include the cost of transportation to or from Japan, the cost of transportation within Japan, or the cost of meals (other than breakfast) during the program.
The program Fee will be collected in cash after arriving in Japan.
Scholarship
Participants in the Spring Program may apply for a government scholarship of 80,000 Japanese Yen, provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have a GPA greater than or equal to 2.3, and not receive any other scholarships for this program which exceed 80,000 Japanese Yen.
Please note that there are a limited number of scholarships available. Scholarships will be awarded based on Grade Point Average (GPA).
Language
The English Course will be conducted entirely in English, whereas the Japanese course will be conducted entirely in Japanese.
Application
Please request the international office of your university to submit your application by email (PDF format) or by FAX by December 1, 2016. Please be sure to include a copy of your passport and your academic record from your previous year.
※The Japanese Course application deadline has been extended until Friday, December 9th!
Visa
An entry visa to Japan is required for students from certain countries. As soon as selection
results are determined, related visa documents will be sent to the responsible persons at your university. Please apply for your visa as soon as possible at the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate.

Seminar held to help university staff improve their TOEIC scores
On August 23, 2016, a seminar was held to provide the University’s administrative and technical staff with pointers to help them improve their TOEIC scores. As one of the universities selected for the government’s Top Global University Project, the aim of the seminar was to promote the globalization of Kumamoto University, and to motivate the university’s administrative and other staff to continue studying English and help them to further improve their language skills.
Attended by close to 30 staff members, Koji Hayakawa, who has a wealth of experience in teaching English at universities, companies and the like, gave a three-hour seminar on the topic of “Effective study methods and mindset for improving TOEIC scores”. He began by talking about the importance of studying English, citing the example of top athletes competing overseas. He then gave pointers for handling the specific sections of the test, and explained the recent trends in TOEIC questions and effective training methods.
Many participants said “The seminar provided us with eye-opening and very useful information” and “I’m going to review my study methods up to this point and I’d like to take the TOEIC test again as soon as possible”. Many of the participants expressed the desire for a repeat of the seminar, which was a resounding success.

Open College Day held by Global Youth Campus
On Saturday, August 6 the Global Youth Campus Open College Day event was held at the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies.
144 students, teachers and family members from each prefecture in Kyushu as well as Yamaguchi prefecture in Honshu joined the event, which was held in order to offer a simple introduction and guidance to participants in regard to English lectures, the IELTS exam, study abroad experience and the Global Leader Course program, which will begin next year at Kumamoto University. Participants offered comments about the event, such as “I definitely want to study under the Global Leader Course” and “This was a good opportunity for me to see how well I match with this course.”
During the lunch break, the “Global Café” was opened, offering high school students the chance to speak directly with the English speaking staff and faculty of the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies, as well as peruse the University’s study abroad programs and hone their interest in international education.
Many of the participants of this event expressed their interest at studying at Kumamoto University and abroad in the future. The College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies will continue to offer opportunities to high school students to experience English courses at Kumamoto University, as well as consultation about studying abroad.

Recruitment for Registration of Monitors to Promote Kyushu
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is conducting “Consumption Rise Project by Promoting Kyushu” to deal with the decrease in expenditure by tourists from Korea, China, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan due to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Accordingly, to increase consumption and tourism to Kyushu, the project invites foreign monitors to travel in the Kyushu area and promote Kyushu via social media.
Number of Monitors: Approximately 50 persons

Kumamoto University International Students Interact Local High School Students
On July 8, ten international students from Kumamoto University visited Dai-Ni High School, a local high school in Kumamoto which has been designated as a “Super Science High School” by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The researchers listened as students of Dai-Ni High School presented their research topics in English, and then asked questions about the scientific process and results of each topic.
The high school students and researchers overcame challenging language barriers to enjoy scientific communication in English. Kumamoto University’s Global Youth Campus looks to continue providing opportunities for local exchange between the university’s international students and the young local community.
Folk Music Seminar & Performance held by Open Education Center
On Thursday July 7, Dr. Rickard and Dr. Chan of the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies held a public seminar in English with Mr. Nick DiSanto, an artist from America, followed by a short performance.
The topic of the seminar was innovation through culture and the revitalization of folkways through music. Around 50 people participated in the seminar, including students and faculty from Kumamoto University, as well as the general public of Kumamoto.
Through events like this, the Center for Open Education aims to contribute to the local community by providing opportunities for global education and international cooperation with Kumamoto University’s College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies.
