Kumamoto University hosts a Top Global University Project Symposium

On Monday, March 5, 2018, Kumamoto University hosted a Top Global University Project Symposium.

 

Under the theme of “Globalization of Universities and Community-based Development of Global Human Resources,” the symposium was held to enable participants to exchange information and opinions so as to help resolve various issues emerging from ongoing globalization in local communities.

 

The first session included a briefing about Kumamoto University’s past, present and future efforts to globalize itself in line with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s (MEXT’s) Top Global University Project, in which the University was selected to take part in AY 2014. The session also covered information about the University’s unique initiatives such as the Global Leader Course and global education opportunities it has offered in partnership with local high schools and other academic institutions, as well as presentations by students who studied under the University’s study-abroad program. The second session included introduction to other Japanese universities’ pioneering efforts to develop global human resources in local communities—lecturers from Hokkaido University, Kanazawa University and University of Fukui explained their university’s efforts.

 

The symposium was attended by about 100 people from universities, high schools and other academic institutions and organizations in and outside Kumamoto Prefecture. Each lecture was followed by a lively discussion.

 

Kumamoto University will make further efforts to globalize itself and develop students’ skills to succeed in a global environment under MEXT’s Top Global University Project.

The Rector of Riga Technical University (Latvia) and others paid a courtesy call to Kumamoto University

 On March 6th, 2018, Prof. Leonids Ribickis, Rector of Riga Technical University (Latvia), and others paid a courtesy call on the President Shinji Harada and Vice president Kazuki Takashima.

 Riga Technical University located in Riga, which is capital city of Latvia, and has been taking the lead in higher education in Latvia.

 At the courtesy meeting, opinions were exchanged on the student and academic exchange situation and the promotion of future exchanges. In addition, a short-term student program was introduced by Riga Technical University. We agreed to continue the development of good relations between our two universities by promoting student exchanges in the future.

 It is hoped that further promotion of exchange between our two universities will result from this visit.

Kumamoto University joins Kasetsart University’s President’s Forum and 75th Anniversary Celebration in Thailand

 On February 1st, 2018, Kasetsart University invited Kumamoto University to join their President’s Forum and celebration of their 75th Anniversary. Vice President Yasumichi Matsumoto and two other Kumamoto University administrators participated.

 Kasetsart University is a national university situated in the northern part of Bangkok, Thailand, and is the country’s third oldest university. The large university is home to approximately 60,000 students and provides a comprehensive education centered around agriculture.

 Research and education efforts of each participating country were highlighted during the forum. During the following president’s meeting, a lively discussion was had about future networks in research and education.

 It is hoped that further exchanges between our two universities will be cultivated from this visit.
